A Live Wedding Painting

On the Capitol Steps

A first dance pose at the Wisconsin State Capitol

Painted live on the south steps of the Wisconsin State Capitol — the groom lifting the bride beneath the building's columns and the green-lantern lamp post.

The Story

How this canvas came together.

The couple wanted the building that frames so much of Madison life to frame their wedding portrait too. We set up just off the Capitol Square as their photographer worked the same moment from a different angle.

Painted in a near-monochrome architectural palette — soft greys for the limestone columns, warm cream for the steps, and a single accent of teal for the historic Capitol lamp post — so the bride's white gown reads as the brightest mark on the canvas.

Finished in studio over the following two weeks, varnished, and delivered framed in antique gold.
